John, you have a good handle on the issues on the East Coast, but you are talking about an issue that has it's beginnings on the West Coast. Even if a writer were to spend a decade or two out West, the dirty dealings that define the birth of privatization would remain hidden from view. If you had described the fisheries that are privatized, with an honest look at the pros and cons, that would have been helpful. Just saying that privatization "is a solid foundation" is a matter of speculation. You are in good company with an editor of the New York Times however. Gongrats.

Thank you for putting Gaines' words into perspective. He really does need to get with the program. His "journalism" is misguided and misguiding: he's preventing people from getting a real handle on the changes that are going to have an impact on their families. By misinforming them, he's going to lead them to make decisions they might regret in a few years when the fishery sea-scape finally gets on a better, more sustainable path. People often say that there will be "winners and losers" with catch shares. Very often it's the uninformed people who are resistant to change up until the very last minute who end up being the "losers" in a changing world.

  • Founder of Seafood.com News. I have 30 years in the seafood industry. Started in New England. My work with Baader in the 1980's introduced me to the global industry. Started my own Internet business in 1994. Survived the dot com boom / bust by being honest. Partnered with Urner Barry, and built Seafood.com News into our flagship product. Also do a lot of speaking and consulting on market issues, price forecasts and outlook. Currently I work for both harvesters and processors in the crab and shrimp industry in Newfoundland, and the crab industry in Alaska. My personal goal is to contribute to the sustainable growth of the entire seafood industry - which occupies a unique and special place in the lives of everyone who is a part of it.
